Italy: development of fresh meat market

In the EU, Italy is the fifth fresh meat importer, beaten by Germany, the UK, France and the Netherlands. In 2016, Italy imported 1.31 million tonnes of fresh meat with a value of €3,265 million (70% of the volume of the imports are pork, and 25% beef), and exported 232,335 tonnes with a value of €698 million (only a sixth of what it imports).
Italy produces almost 4 million tonnes of fresh meat per year, with an approximate value of €11 billion. 41% of this total production is pork.
In 2016, up to 4.7 million tonnes of fresh meat, with a value of €12,500 million, were consumed in Italy in 2016: mainly pork and fowl. The average meat consumption is 75 kg/person/year, of which 33 kg are pork, 21 kg beef, 19 kg fowl and almost 2 kg lamb.
Therefore, the fresh meat market in Italy can only grow by improving the characteristics of the product and its added services regarding variety and consumption situations.
